What is a Shrub?

 

A shrub is a cocktail based on vinegar, soda water and/ or fresh ingredients such as mint, raspberry, lemon or basil. These recipes have been specially developed for Oil & Vinegar by Tess Posthumus – better known as world’s best female bartender! She selected her favourite vinegars for making shrubs.

 

Below we have recipes for her Mrs. Miller Shrub, Mexican Mango, Shirley Shrub, and The Maayan Experience!


Mrs. Miller Shrub
The Mrs. Miller Shrub is a classic gin and tonic with a twist: gin’s strong flavour is paired with the mildly sweet elderflower-apple-lime vinegar and refined using tonic, mint leaves and lime!

This shrub was named after Anistatia Miller. She is the wife of Jared Brown, the inventor of Sipsmith gin. It’s therefore no surprise that there’s gin in this recipe! The couple live just outside London where they cultivate several varieties of fruit, vegetables, and herbs for creating refreshing cocktails.

Ingredients:
45 ml gin
20 ml Elderflower Apple Lime Vinegar
5 ml sugar syrup
45 ml tonic
6 fresh mint leaves
Lime wedge

Preparation:
Shake the gin, vinegar and sugar syrup. Take a martini glass and fine-strain the cocktail into the glass. Next add the tonic and garnish with fresh mint and a wedge of lime.


Mexican Mango
In Mexico they call tequila the elixir of gods. Pour this into a cold glass of ice cubes, add the sweet and fruity flavour of mango pulp vinegar and you won’t believe your taste buds!

Ingredients:
50 ml blanco tequila
20 ml Mango Pulp Vinegar
5 ml agave syrup
thin slice of fresh jalapeño pepper
slice of mango
Ice cubes

Preparation:
Blend all ingredients except for the pepper and mango in a (cocktail) shaker filled with ice cubes. Take a (rocks) glass and fill it with ice cubes. Fine-strain the cocktail into the glass and garnish with a wedge of mango and jalapeño pepper.


Shirley Shrub
Our Shirley Shrub is made from ginger beer and pomegranate vinegar. This slightly cloudy shrub is served with a slice of lemon and makes the ideal refreshment for summer days. Moreover, it’s alcohol free!

Ingredients:
120 ml ginger beer
10 ml Pomegranate Vinegar
5 ml sugar syrup
Lemon slice
Pomegranate seeds
Ice cubes

Preparation:
Fill a long drink glass with ice cubes and add all ingredients except for the lemon and pomegranate seeds. Briefly stir and garnish with a slice of lemon and pomegranate seeds.


The Maayan Experience
This shrub with the sweet and fruity taste of strawberry vinegar is a delicious alcohol-free thirst quencher! If you have a really sweet tooth, you can always add syrup, but that’s definitely not a must thanks to the high quantity of natural fruit sugars in the vinegar.

Ingredients:
45 ml soda water
10 ml Strawberry Pulp Vinegar
5 ml sugar syrup
15 leafs of fresh basil
Twig of basil
Strawberry
Crushed ice

Preparation:
Add the basil leaves to a long drink glass and mix them with the sugar syrup and strawberry vinegar. Next, fill the glass with crushed ice and add the soda water. Give everything a quick stir and garnish with a strawberry and a stem of basil.
